IS WEATHER AN IMPORTANT ISSUE FOR STUDENT CANDIDATES AND NEW PILOTS?;  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

QUESTION: I am a student pilot in training. How important is it to understand weather and what causes it?;  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

ANSWER: This is a subject that many books have been written about. It is very important, so much so that your life may one day depend on your weather knowledge. I am not saying that you need to become as knowledgeable as a meteorologist, but a good knowledge of the basics will pay dividends throughout your flying career.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As VFR pilots, we put weather into two categories: good or bad.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We fly when it's good and we don't fly when it's bad. With time and experience, you will develop your own definition of good and bad weather, as every pilot has his\/her own.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some weather is good for all pilots - Blue skies, light winds, excellent visibility. Fly it. Some weather is bad for all pilots - Thunderstorms, severe turbulence, reduced visibility. Don't fly it.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rest will come through your personal comfort level developed through experience. *A concept that has served me well in my 40 years of flying is this: The weather is where it is. What you see is what you get. It doesn't matter what other pilots reported, what was forecast, what it was supposed to be, or how long it was predicted to last. When you look out of your airplane, what you see in front of you is what it is now. Never hesitate to divert, turn back, or land if you don't like what you see. No one will think or say anything about you that will diminish you for it.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And finally, remember this wise Air Force saying: It is far better to be on the ground wishing you were flying, than flying and wishing you were on the ground.\u201cIt is far better to be on the ground wishing you were flying, than flying and wishing you were on the ground<\/em>\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
